André Kertész (AMERICAN/HUNGARIAN, 1894–1985)
Homing Ship, East Walk of Conservatory Pond, Central Park, NY, 1944
10 x 8 Gelatin Silver print
Signed in verso
$14,000
In Homing Ship, taken in 1944, a figure perhaps of a child, carries a model schooner across from Conservatory Pond in Central Park back to the boathouse. The picture presents a body of water, front and center, a puddle essentially, that has become magnified and takes half of the whole composition. Through a sophisticated use of movement and form, the image creates a metaphor of spatial inversion and poetic allusions. Kertész justifies the boat out of the water, referencing that he is also searching for a reconnection to his element.

NOTE: During his life, Rembrandt made a number of paintings and etchings of beggars, finally producing a portrait of himself as a beggar in 1630. For his Beggars project, Vik Muniz has recreated two of these Rembrandt etchings using small arrangements of straight pins, staples, wire, needles, paper clips and nails that are then photographed and enlarged. Where there was crosshatching, Muniz has stacked layers of pins and nails. The optical trickery is witty and satisfying — the vivacity and strength of Rembrandt’s line expressed through banal hardware fragments.

NOTE: In “About 30,” the series captures Los Angeles women - all in their mid-30s, all friends of the photographer - who invited Gail to accompany them in their daily activities: yoga, pedicures and trips to the beach, parties for their kids and each other. Time and mortality are the deep echoing themes of these photographs – the end of 20s, the beginning of 30s, the end of innocence and realization of impermanence.
